@Rob, pretty much any solution that has a single drive as a backup is always going to be risky, as you have noticed. I have yet to see a reliable solution that can tell when a drive is going to fail, and give you time to replace that drive. What I like about the WHS, is that my photos are backed up on at least two drives, and it is completely transparent to me. I did have a drive fail, the WHS alerted my on my desktop. I was able to replace the drive, with out any loss of data, and the system kept working while I was waiting for the new drive to arrive.

A Drobo will do the same thing, but I am not sure if they have a network solution yet.

Great article. I have been thinking about getting a Drobo for a long time but I think they are a little but expensive and to enable it to connect to the network you have to buy the optional network share thingy for another 2 bills. That sucks. However, I do like the idea of 4 drives and the backup solution. I just had a 1st gen Ximeta drive tank on me and I am in the process of doing a RAW copy as we speak. My only issue with any of these solutions are whenever you install a connected device I have not seen a way to detect if the hard drives within are going bad. The Ximeta Drive did not warn me and I also have a Netgear two drive NAS device that really sucks from the standpoint of disk management. I would like a way to be alerted if the HD are failing in my backup device! This has prevented me from getting any of the solutions thus far. I also have been looking at the Windows Home server for this. I would think that would solve my issue of disk checking and possibly getting a warning before it is to late.

I would love to hear some thoughts on getting something setup that would alert me if my backup solution is starting to fail.

Hi Mike, It looks like KeepVault has changed its pricing, now you get 100GB for $99/year. I guess I got in early before they changed their pricing. Yeah that first sync takes days

How did you get an unlimited KeepVault subscription for only $100/yr? Most of the rest of us mortals only get 100 gigs for that price. That sounds like a pretty good deal but I think I'll still stick with Mozy - their unlimited storage plan is only $4.95/month (per PC), and is good enough for my offsite backup needs (even though it takes for.ev.er. to get everything up there when you first set things up)
