Yesterday was pretty productive. There have been a few projects that I have been delaying due to the rain. Now that the rain has stopped, I was able to get the address sign post into the ground for the new tiny house on our property. The days of rain made digging the hole to put the post in way easier than it would have been otherwise. It goes to show that sometimes putting projects off pays off. I also got started on the hand railing for the steps in my new workshop. So far the install hasn’t been difficult, just a bit more planning than I thought was going to be necessary. Having most of my tools still in my main house garage means that every time I need a new tool, I am walking between the locations. I think I will plan on starting to move over some of my tools into the new garage. It is frustrating that I don’t have that thing done yet, since it would be great to really be using it.

There are times when it seems silly to even be working on this new garage and workshop given that we are going to be traveling for at least two years. And likely much longer if we end up liking this form of travel as much as we think we will. So at some point in the future I will have a nice workshop to come home to. Which timing wise may make sense. If we end up traveling for ten years like we talk about then I will get back right around the time most people consider traditional retirement age. Then I can escape into my workshop. Who knows, trying to create some ideal of what life will be like ten years from now always seems like a waste of effort. But we do it all the time.

Looking forward in time seems so easy, from our current vantage point. We know what is going on now, and it seems like we should be able to know what we would want to be doing five or ten years in the future. What we don’t often do is look backwards that same amount and reflect on the gap in our understanding. If I placed myself even five years back. It was the middle of the pandemic. I was still working. I knew I wanted to retire early, but didn’t yet know when. But in no way did I believe we would be doing travel like we have been. And definitely not thinking about doing it on motorcycles. We think we know what a given day would look like in the future. We set up many of our plans towards that future. And maybe that puts us on a path that we don’t fully understand or see at the time. So it isn’t that our prediction of the future is wrong so much as it is not clear to any real level of detail that allows us to really see it.

So, who knows, when we get done traveling, I hope that the investment of time and money into building my dream garage / workshop will pay off. Being the place I want to spend time when we are not traveling. For who I am right now that is for sure my plan. We will just see if who I become wants the same things.
