I started to spend some time, while I was getting all my electronics gear together, trying to learn a little bit about video editing. Video editing seems like another major rabbit hole to go down. The technical use of the tools is something I understand at a basic level given past experience using photo editing software. It seems now products such as DaVinci Resolve are more like photography editing tools than just timeline editors. The thing that is both interesting to me and a bit daunting is the story part. Sure, the mechanics of learning to put together a final video aren’t all that difficult to put together something basic. But, trying to tell a story with what you captured is a whole different thing. Some of the YouTube creators that I follow due to their motorcycle content do a very good job at telling a story along with their motorcycle content. The work that goes into writing the story and then having all the raw content to stitch it all together really is an art. And until you see the pieces put together, it may not seem like they are putting that much time and effort into their craft, but they clearly are.
The prospect of creating the story, filming all the parts, and still doing motorcycle riding seems a bit overwhelming to me. After all, I am not trying to create a channel for a living or anything like that. It is a full creative pursuit which is interesting, but a lot to think about when getting started. Reminding myself that I can just dip my toe into this and see how much I enjoy the process, and if I am enjoying it enough to put in the time. It is always difficult to see someone who is clearly very good at what they are doing when you are just starting out. And I don’t know where I want to go with any of this. Other people’s videos are inspirations, but I would need to love doing the work to have it really stick for me. At this point, all I can practically do is try this in small steps. And not get overwhelmed by the full process. And see how much I enjoy it.
The one reason I am entertaining stepping into the world of creating videos, even if they only end up being for us, is I feel like I may need a project during our travels. Especially our long travels. Most days will be filled with something related to the trip. Traveling between towns, or seeing something along our journey. But, there likely will be a good amount of downtime also. I won’t have my workshop, or all the various projects that have organically grown around my home while on the road. So introducing a new creative pursuit seems like a good thing to keep my creative side engaged. There is also the fact that the camera can act as a way to meet new people. Asking someone to take a photo can open up a conversation that I likely would not initiate on my own. The challenge is this world has become so fixated with sharing every part of life on social media that some of the best experiences seem lost because people are just trying to get something recorded that would be impressive to their followers. I know I can’t change that fact, but it does give me pause to go down this route at all. Coming up with a way to distinguish what I am trying to do with recording our travels from the ‘Instagram Influencer’ seems like a fine line, even if it is all just in my own head.
